Welding fume exposure has taken centre stage, with recent findings linking it to various forms of cancer and health issues. As a result, protecting welders from the dangers of welding fumes is more critical than ever.
Studies have raised concerns about the long-term health impacts, with welders facing up to a 43% increased risk of lung cancer compared to those who have never been exposed to welding fumes.
At SMENCO, we’re committed to addressing these concerns by providing welding technology designed to mitigate risks and safeguard the well-being of welders.
In a recent scientific study, the effectiveness of various welding fume control methods was evaluated to reduce exposure to welding fumes. The methods analysed included:
- On-Gun Fume Extraction
- Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV)
- Welding Helmet with a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR)
- Hooded Capture LEV
The results were divided into two categories:
- The Welder’s Exposure to Welding Fume: The study found that a Welding Helmet with an Integrated Powered Air Purifying Respirator was the most effective method for reducing a welder’s exposure to welding fumes, with a significant reduction of at least 99.96%.
- Removing Welding Fume from the Environment: On-Gun Fume Extraction LEV proved 33% more effective than Hooded Capture LEV in extracting welding fumes from the environment.
Interpreting the Results:
For Welder’s Exposure: Welding Helmets with Integrated PAPRs offer superior respiratory protection, comfort, and cost savings compared to traditional respirators.
For Removing Fumes: On-Gun Fume Extraction is highly effective, following the welder as they move, reducing welding fume exposure to all workers in the environment.
Adopting Welding Fume Controls
The study reinforces the importance of prioritising welding fume protection. Welding Helmets with Integrated PAPRs and On-Gun Fume Extraction should be key considerations for the safety of welders and others in the workspace.
Putting Health and Safety First
As industry leaders, we understand the significance of protecting welders. With our range of welding products, including those from Kemper and Optrel, we provide effective solutions that prioritise health and safety in the welding industry.
