In a report conducted by University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney in 2019*, Australia is the world’s 16th largest GHG-emitting country. In addition, the companies in the country that extract and sell coal, gas, and oil have also been founded to be great contributors to climate change.
In 2018 alone, the emissions produced from the coal extractions by the top six coal producers in Australia amounted to 551Mt CO2-e, which was higher than the whole country’s projected domestic emissions of 534Mt CO2-e.

Carbon Reduction and Offsetting Initiatives
With the massive carbon emissions that mining companies and giants across the globe are accounted for, major mining companies and multinational corporations are setting targets to minimise their carbon emissions within 10-15 years and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, in line with meeting the Paris Agreement.
As such, various movements and projects have been started by these multinational corporations to minimise their impact on environmental degradation by reducing or offsetting their carbon footprint.
-
Renewable Energy
Renewable energy in the mining industry provides various benefits not only for the environment but for mining operations as well. Some of the most common forms of renewable energy in the industry include hydropower, geothermal energy, hydrogen and fuel cell energy, biodiesel, wind, and solar energy. With renewable energy, mining operations can lower their greenhouse gas emissions whilst lowering their operational costs.
Machinery and technology powered by green energy also contribute to cleaner, more sustainable, and energy-efficient operations not just in the mining industry, but in other sectors, too.

Tree Planting
Planting trees is one of the initiatives that many corporate organizations have taken to offset their carbon emissions and reduce their carbon footprint. Planting trees can help sequester carbon emissions and can lay the groundwork for carbon offsetting. Moreover, tree planting initiatives can also help offset deforestation, improve habitats, and create employment opportunities.
In support of sustainability best practices to offset and reduce carbon emissions, Optrel vows to plant one tree for every Swiss Air respiratory protection system product sold.
Purchase the Swiss Air respiratory protection system here and be a part of Optrel’s initiative towards reducing carbon emission.
